Business registration
Proprietorship Business Registration
The simplest way to start a business on your own. We help you get the registrations that give your proprietorship an identity.
A sole proprietorship is the simplest way to start a business in India. There is no separate legal entity: you and the business are the same, and the business income is taxed as your personal income. It is quick to set up and has the lightest compliance of any structure.
Who it suits
Freelancers, consultants, shopkeepers, traders and home-based businesses often start as proprietorships. It works well when you are the only owner and the business does not carry large risks. The trade-off is unlimited personal liability, so if your business grows or takes on bigger commitments, it may be worth moving to an OPC or a private limited company.
How FileMyGSTR helps
Because a proprietorship has no single registration, the key is getting the right set of registrations in your business name. We talk to you about your business, tell you which ones you need, and handle the applications, typically GST and Udyam. Once you are set up, we can look after your GST returns, bookkeeping and income tax return.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a single registration for a proprietorship?
No. A proprietorship is not registered as a separate entity. It gets its identity through registrations such as GST, Udyam (MSME) and shop and establishment registration. Which ones you need depends on your business.
Am I personally liable for the business?
Yes. A proprietorship and its owner are legally the same, so the owner is personally responsible for the business's debts. If limited liability matters to you, consider a one person company or private limited company.
How is a proprietorship taxed?
The business income is added to the proprietor's own income and reported in their personal income tax return. Small businesses and professionals may be able to use the presumptive taxation scheme. We can help with this through our income tax return filing service.
Can I open a current account in my business name?
Yes, but banks usually ask for two or more proofs of the business, such as a GST certificate and Udyam certificate. We help you get the registrations that make this easier.
